HR is far more than hiring and payroll. Here’s a plain-English guide to what human resource management really involves, how it works in Indian companies, and how AI is changing the job.

HR analytics makes decisions based on employee information.
There are four stages, from reporting to prediction.
AI helps accelerate the process, but people make the decisions.
Anyone who has graduated can apply for it, not only HR.
Human Resource Management (HRM) refers to how the organisation plans, recruits, develops, pay, motivates and retains its employees in compliance with the labour law. The eight key functions of human resource management start from staffing to HR analytics. In India, human resource management currently works under four labour codes effective from 21 November 2025, and AI has automated HR tasks.
Ask anyone what human resource professionals do, and they will tell you that "they recruit employees and manage their payrolls." And while that is one part of HR, there must have been someone who figured out how many employees to recruit, how to train them, how to pay them fairly, and ensure that all laws are adhered to by the organization.
This entire process is human resource management.
In this guide, we will help you understand the meaning of HRM, its functions, evolution, changes in Indian labour codes, and role of AI in HRM. You can find more such guides on eAsia Academy.

Human resource management (HRM) is the process by which an organisation recruits, develops, compensates, cares for, and retains its people so that the organisation and its workers can function at maximum efficiency.
The concept is very basic. Machines, capital and premises can all be bought. Skills, knowledge and dedication come from people. HRM is simply getting the best from that “human” resource through treating the people properly.
Good HRM benefits three parties:
Short Answer: There are eight major functions of HRM, which include workforce planning, recruitment & selection, onboarding, training & development, performance management, compensation & benefits, employee relations and compliance, and HR analytics. All these functions account for the entire employee lifecycle, right from their joining to departure from the organization.
Short Answer: Personnel management views people as a burden and concentrates on documentation, salaries, and policies. HRM views people as an asset that can be cultivated and connects personnel decision-making with organizational objectives. Contemporary HRM does one more thing and supports these decisions with analytics and artificial intelligence.
| Aspect | Personnel Management | Human Resource Management | Data & AI-Driven HRM |
|---|---|---|---|
| People perspective | Cost of controlling | Developing the asset | Asset, in the context of data |
| Primary focus | Documentation, payroll, procedures | Engagement, development, culture | Prediction, personalization, strategy |
| People's involvement in the business | Administrative assistance | Business partner | Strategic consultant armed with data |
| Decision-making based on | Precedent and policy | Experience and judgment | Insight informed by analysis |
Most Indian companies sit between the second and third columns. Large IT firms, GCCs (global capability centres), banks and startups are moving fastest into the third.
Short answer: On 21 November 2025, four labour codes were made operational in India, superseding 29 existing labour laws. HR departments have to align the wage structure, appointment letters, social security provisions, and safety processes in accordance with the new labour codes and state regulations.
Minimum wages, wage payments, and a common definition of wages.
Trade unions, standing orders, retrenchment and disputes.
PF, ESI, gratuity and social security for gig and platform workers.
Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions.
Some of the provisions depend on rules made by individual states, so keep an eye on their notifications.
Data about people is increasingly becoming part of sustainability reporting as well. The “S” of ESG, which includes safety, diversity, training and attrition, is disclosed by the largest publicly-listed companies in India through the BRSR report. You can read our article on ESG to learn more.

Short answer: The use of AI technology in HRM involves screening resumes, answering employees' questions via chatbots, recommending training programs, identifying the staff that is likely to leave the company, and generating summaries from surveys.
AI has limits. Models trained on biased history can repeat that bias, and employee data is protected under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023. Use AI as an assistant, not a decision-maker.
Short answer: The modern HR professional should have people skills, knowledge of labour laws, business understanding, data skills, and AI literacy.
Fortunately, the field of HR welcomes students from a wide variety of disciplines – business, humanities, science, engineering, and many others. Many MBA students also combine HR with sustainability, as we explored in why MBA students are choosing ESG careers.

HRM is simply how the organization sources, develops, rewards, maintains and retains their employees so that both the workers and the organization can perform effectively.
The functions include workforce planning, recruitment and selection, onboarding, training and development, performance management, compensation and benefits, employee relations and compliance, and HR analytics.
Personnel management is an older administrative approach which concentrates on documentation, payrolls and regulations. Human resource management regards people as an important organizational asset.
The four new labour codes of India which are the Code on Wages, the Industrial Relations Code, the Code on Social Security and the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code came into operation on 21 November 2025. They integrate 29 labour laws that existed before.
In HRM, the application of artificial intelligence involves resume screening, interview scheduling, answering employees' questions with the help of chatbots, personalised learning, predicting attrition and analysis of survey responses. HR experts still take the ultimate decisions and audit the results obtained via AI.
The key objectives of HRM are obtaining the right-fit personnel, developing their skills and performance, rewarding them properly, maintaining safety and legal compliance of the work environment, and retaining them.
Yes, it is. All organisations need HR experts. There is a rising demand for HR professionals who know about labour law, data analysis and AI. It does not matter whether you are a graduate of commerce, arts, science, engineering or management specialisation.
